How to create project templates and submission questions

A project template standardizes submissions. This makes it easier for participants to provide the right information and for judges to evaluate projects consistently.

ℹ️ Note: Default Submission Questions

Hackathons created from scratch (not from a template) now include four default submission questions. You can edit, reorder, or delete these questions at any time from the project template editor.

Customize the project template

  1. In Edit mode, scroll down to the Projects section.
  2. Click the Edit project template button.

This opens the template editor where you can define what every project submission must include.

Add submission form questions

These are questions participants must answer when they submit their project. This is ideal for gathering specific technical details or business justifications that aren't part of the main project description.

  1. In the template editor, add your questions.
  2. Toggle "Make required" if an answer is mandatory for submission.
  3. Responses are only visible to Organizers and Judges.

💡 Tip: You can reorder submission questions by dragging and dropping them. All question types, including confirmation checkboxes and labels with links, are supported here.

High-impact examples:

  • To measure impact ("Before & After"): "Describe the current workflow your project improves. How is it better with your solution?"
  • To assess business value: "How many people or customers does this project have the potential to impact?"
  • To gauge implementation readiness: "What would be the immediate next step to implement this project?"
  • To gather product feedback: "What was the biggest challenge you faced while building with [Your Product/API] during this hackathon?"
  • To understand future potential: "What is the one feature you would add to this project if you had one more week?"

Define required assets

Use this section to specify the deliverables for a complete submission.

  • Check the boxes for standard assets like a "Prototype" or "Video Demo."
  • To add a custom requirement (like "Link to GitHub Repo" or "Live API Endpoint"), click + CUSTOM REQUIRED ASSET and enter a descriptive name.

💡 Tip: Use descriptive headers in the main "Description" section of the template to guide your participants. For instance, if you want them to explain their project's business value, add a header like "How does this solve a business problem?"

After you save the template, it applies to all new projects created in your hackathon. Existing projects are not affected.
