User roles and permissions

Understanding the different roles in Devpost for Teams is key to managing your organization and hackathons. There are four primary roles: Admin, Organizer, Member, and Guest.

Admin

Admins have the highest level of permissions and are responsible for managing the entire organization's account.

Key permissions:

  • ✅ Can do everything a Member and Organizer can do.
  • Create and manage custom hackathon templates for the organization.
  • Remove any user (Members, Organizers, and Guests) from the organization via Organization Settings.
  • ✅ Access and manage top-level Organization Settings.

Organizer

Organizers are Members who create a hackathon or are given management access to one. They control all settings for a specific event.

Key permissions:

  • ✅ Can do everything a Member can do.
  • Edit all settings for a hackathon they manage (like rules, deadlines, and content).
  • Manage participants for their hackathon (for example, approve guest requests).
  • Control the full judging process for their hackathon (set up criteria, run rounds, and announce winners).

Limitations:

  • Cannot manage organization-level settings (like removing users or creating custom templates).

Member

Members are the core users of your organization's Hackathon Center. Most users in your company are Members.

Key permissions:

  • Create new hackathons (which makes them an Organizer of that hackathon).
  • Register for any hackathon in the organization.
  • Create, submit, and join projects.
  • Invite other coworkers to join the Hackathon Center.
  • ✅ Act as a judge on a hackathon.
  • ✅ View all public hackathons and projects within the organization.

Guest

Guests are external users (for example, partners, customers, or contractors) who are invited to participate in a specific hackathon. Their access is limited to prevent them from seeing sensitive company-wide information.

Key permissions:

  • ✅ View and register for the specific hackathon they are invited to.
  • ✅ Create, submit, and join projects within that hackathon only.
  • ✅ View other participants and projects within that hackathon only.

Limitations:

  • Cannot view other hackathons in the organization.
  • Cannot invite new members or other guests.
  • Cannot access the main Hackathon Center homepage.
